Orange County's Top 5 Worst Public Schools

Like most other metropolitan cities across America, Orange County is home to a significant number of public schools. Unfortunately, not all of these schools are equal and some of them are known for their poor academic performance, faulty learning infrastructure, and overall lack of progress. In this blog post, we are going to highlight the worst public schools in Orange County, and examine what needs to be done to fix the issue. While no school is perfect, students have the right to attend schools that provide quality education in a safe and supportive environment.

1) Yorba Middle School

Located in Anaheim, Yorba Middle School has been ranked one of the worst public schools in Orange County on multiple occasions. It has received a 2 out of 10 from GreatSchools, a leading nonprofit school rating organization. The main problems with the school include inadequate teacher support, low test scores, and high absenteeism rates. In 2019, only 12% of its students were proficient in math and only 21% were proficient in English language arts.

2) Cypress High School

Cypress High School is another Orange County public school that has received a poor rating from GreatSchools, with a 4 out of 10. The school’s academic programs and extracurricular activities are subpar, and some critics have also raised concerns about the school’s culture of bullying. In 2019, only 38% of its students were proficient in math and 60% were proficient in English language arts.

3) La Vista High School

Located in Fullerton, La Vista High School is another school that has struggled to make progress over the years. It has a 2 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools and has many issues related to absenteeism, low graduation rates, and low test scores. In 2019, only 1% of its students were proficient in math and 5% were proficient in English language arts.

4) Magnolia Science Academy

Although Magnolia Science Academy is a charter school and not technically a public school, it deserves a mention on this list. The school, located in Anaheim, has a 2 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools, and the parents of students have raised concerns about the school’s curriculum and teacher quality. In 2019, only 22% of its students were proficient in math and 38% were proficient in English language arts.

5) Westminster High School

Westminster High School, located in Westminster, is one of the lowest-performing high schools in Orange County. It has a 3 out of 10 rating from GreatSchools, and the school's graduation rates, test scores, and college readiness are all below average. In 2019, only 23% of its students were proficient in math and 45% were proficient in English language arts.
